It contains a data and history bufferdedicated to Janssen’s data. The MQTT Server, which acts as a securebridge between the MQTT transmitter andthe cloud. This connection is also securedvia user authentication. The Ignition Edge Server, which acts as theMQTT transmitter at the contract manufacturer’splant, gathering only Janssen’s keyprocess data directly from the control systemand publishing it through an outbound-onlyport on the control network firewall to theMQTT server.The system created for Janssen by ACC consistsof three main components that work together: MQTT architectures need three components:MQTT transmitters-the clients thatproduce the data-usually directly connected tothe control or SCADA system the MQTT engine,the clients that consume the data and theMQTT servers, which distribute the data fromthe transmitters to the engine. MQTT is a publish/subscribe messagingprotocol originally developed more than 20years ago to address the need for lightweight communicationsover low-bandwidth networks. The Cirrus Link MQTT transmitter, distributorand engine, plus the Azure Injector, formed the heartof the system, all running on Inductive Automation’sIgnition platform. It also supportedthe manufacturer’s ability to make the vaccinewith fewer operators, which was particularly importantwith the social distancing requirementsaround COVID-19. This architecture proved to operatereliably in an external, unfamiliar environmentwhile preserving data quality. Using MQTT, ACC was able to establish a securegateway that ensured only Janssen’s data wastransmitted. Ignition provided a robustdevelopment environment and support for MQTTmessaging, which was ideal for this applicationbecause it is designed to be used for secure, realtime,mission-critical data. The manufacturer tasked independent systemintegrator Automated Control Concepts (ACC),which is headquartered in Neptune, N.J., withcreating a secure data pipeline that could providethis critical information to Janssen.Ī secure and scalable architecture was requiredto meet Janssen’s information needs,starting with a Microsoft Azure Internet ofThings (IoT) Hub that Janssen provided to receivethe production and batch data from thecontract manufacturer’s system.ĪCC then recommended using Inductive Automation’sIgnition software platform with CirrusLink’s MQTT modules as the heart of thissecure data pipeline. Thiswas difficult to achieve since the contract manufacturer’soperations technology (OT) infrastructure,including control systems and data collection,is isolated from both internal and outside networks,particularly networks with internet access. Janssen required access to near real-time datato monitor key production and quality metrics sothat it could assure the success of each batch. To reach that goal, Janssenturned to a contract manufacturer that specializedin rapid manufacturing of vaccines and othertreatments in large quantities during publichealth emergencies. Johnson & Johnson challenged its pharmaceuticalarm, Janssen, with producing one billiondoses of its vaccine. Technology playeda key role in that effort, not only in creating newvaccines in record time but in ensuring they wouldbe of the highest quality. As the world marshalled its resources in2020 to fight the COVID-19 virus pandemic,major pharmaceutical companieswere among those on the front lines, racing todevelop, test and produce vaccines that couldhelp protect billions of people.
